4 of our responders got deployed to collect 50 beds and bedding to be transported to a rest centre, for the evacuated residents from billing aquadrome flooding

We'll also be having a collection to help raise funds to allow us to train and equip our responders so they can say warm, dry and, most importantly, safe this winter. If you are able to make a donation it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

In winter you're more likely to encounter flooding on the road. Just a small amount of water in an engine can cause serious damage.

You can't tell if the road surface is damaged, if there's hidden debris or covers have been lifted. Flood water is often contaminated too, especially in urban areas where sewers have overflowed.

If your route is flooded, turn around and go a different way: think don't sink.

As the days get shorter we need our lights more to see and, more importantly, to be seen. Use your dipped headlights in rain or misty conditions, and don't rely on your daytime running lights as your tail lights might not be lit for those behind you.

Check yours are working, and consider carrying a spare bulb set so you can replace any that fail while you're out.

In winter, consider taking some essentials with you in the car in case of bad weather. Consider carrying:

- Warm, waterproof clothing
- food & water
- de-icer & scraper
- tow rope
- shovel
- first aid kit & foil blankets
- high-vis vest

Even on a short journey the unexpected can happen, so be prepared. It might not be your breakdown or accident: you might get caught in someone else's disruption.

Driving is expensive, but you could be wasting money by driving with incorrectly inflated tyres.

Not only could the tyre wear unevenly and need replacement, but it can affect your fuel economy too. The ride and handling can also be affected, potentially causing a loss of control.

You'll find the correct pressures for your car in the handbook, or on sticker by the driver's door. Many cars come with a plug-in pump to help you adjust the pressure, or most garages have an air line you can use.
